What is Zero Energy Building?

A zero energy building is all-electric and so energy efficient that all of its annual energy needs are met with on-site renewable energy. Many similar terms for this kind of high performance building exist, such as “net zero” or “zero emissions.” We primarily use the term zero energy because the Climate Innovation Center is registered to receive Zero Energy certification through the International Living Future Institute.

To achieve zero energy status, new or renovated buildings utilize integrated design and energy modeling to maximize energy efficiency. Reducing energy consumption makes it simpler and less expensive to meet the building’s energy needs with renewable sources of energy.

BENEFITS OF A ZERO ENERGY BUILDING

A zero energy building is a pathway for a resilient, affordable, and healthy built environment.

Key benefits include:

No local air pollution and significantly reduced carbon emissions: By combining a super-efficient building with energy efficient electric equipment and appliances on top of on-site solar energy, zero energy buildings eliminate the need to use polluting fossil fuels for functions like space heating, water heating, and cooking.

Optimal health and comfort: Zero-energy buildings prioritize occupant health by utilizing things like high-performance windows, advanced ventilation systems, and natural lighting. These simple measures improve indoor air quality and create healthy, comfortable spaces.

Low monthly energy costs: By generating their own on-site energy, usually through rooftop solar, zero energy buildings produce as much energy as they consume over a year, resulting in significantly reduced utility bills.

Community resilience: A zero energy building equipped with battery storage can maintain operations in the event of power outages. In times of natural disasters or grid disruptions, these buildings can continue to operate independently, providing essential services and shelter to occupants and serving as critical resources for the surrounding community.
